LUMPENBALL

The End of the Official Season
This event is at the end of the season and was held after the regular meeting on February 15th.  A Lumpen, in German, is a hobo or a very poor person. This is symbolic to a greater or  lesser degree of all Karneval participants at the end of the season. Karneval is rather expensive with costumes, travel, refreshments, gifts and all so we are all a little poorer in terms of money--a little like a Lumpen or hobo. However, we are all much richer in terms of experiences,  friendships, and memories and for that we are thankful. Because we are all "poor" at this time, we all dress in rags or like hobos.

Der Naar ist Tot
The second aspect, given the end of the season, is that the Karneval Spirit (or Naar) is laid to rest until next November 11th. Some years we have a formal ceremony. This year, it was just known that the Naar is Tot.
